To improve her clients’ dark, cluttered kitchen, Cheryl Herweg of Changing Spaces redesigned it to flow into the dining area and the rest of the house. She also incorporated a large island with an engineered stone top, which provides a surface for food prep and serving, as well as a place for casual meals. Large bamboo pendant lights were installed to fill the void created by the high ceiling and add warmth.

8. INTRODUCE PATTERN An all-white kitchen can look stark and clinical. Bring in colour and pattern with blinds in a striking geometric or floral. Blinds are not a permanent fixture so you can change them later on.

9. REPLACE SOLID DOORS WITH GLASS Banks of solid cabinetry can make a kitchen feel claustrophobic. Replacing solid doors with framed glass doors makes the kitchen feel less cramped, and allows you to show off beautiful glassware and crockery.

10. BRING IN TRENDY BAR STOOLS Up the style factor with new bar stools in a modern design. They also encourage the family to gather around and chat to the cook.
