We were appointed by our client to refurbish, furnish and style their beach house which they had purchased, and to have it ready in time for their summer vacation. The lead time was exactly six weeks, in which we had to have custom furnishings manufactured, art, objet, decor items and accessories sourced (including the Christmas decorations) and also have all window treatments made. Cheryl and her team also project managed the cosmetic renovation which included choosing new light fittings and having them installed and working with the lighting automation, the internal painting of the entire house, new cabinetry in certain areas, new stone tops in the main en-suite, new audio visual equipment and landscaping the internal gardens.

The original kitchen had a pink hued-like washed-oak finish which was not going to work with the new look Cheryl envisaged. To remedy this, the entire kitchen and scullery was freshly painted in a stunning, moody midnight blue which instantly gave it depth. We had a new integrated Gaggenau fridge/freezer and wine cooler installed, as well as a brand new kitchen island with the most beautiful counter top which has waterfall sides that make it seamless. We also included seating at the kitchen island. New bamboo pendants add even more warmth to the area.

Cheryl designed and manufactured custom-made furniture to fit each area perfectly, and the choice of fabrics and materials create a gorgeous flow from the large open plan living areas through to the bedrooms and cinema/games room. We chose linens, cottons, wicker, raffia, bamboo and natural materials with a lot of texture. The wall paper in the open plan living areas is a grass cloth which adds character and tactility, making it the perfect backdrop to the overall decor.

Each of the eight bedrooms have custom-designed headboards, pedestals, chairs, wall paper and crisp Egyptian cotton linen. They are all uniquely furnished and decorated but there is a definite continuity from room to room underpinned through the application of a neutral colour palette. Each bedroom’s decor sits comfortably in the space, as it flows with the natural beauty of the seascape, and does not compete with it.

In the main bedroom and the main bedroom lounge we once again used a lot of natural fabrics and materials with a lot of texture, as these work so well with the vast views and natural tones and textures of the outdoors. A commissioned artwork by Katherine Wood is featured on the grass cloth wall papered wall in the main bedroom lounge. Her work is very textural which is exactly what Cheryl wanted for the artwork in this area. She created a tranquil and peaceful space in this area, allowing you to instantly feel that you’re on holiday.

The children’s rooms were given more colour with varying shades of salmon pink for the girl and then blues and lime greens for the boy. We had a lot of fun designing and decorating the children’s bedrooms, giving them a space that reflects each of their personalities.

The cinema room has large comfy couches and bean bags, with lots of feather filled scatter cushions included to ensure relaxed seating. The lower half of the walls were treated with architectural moulding and painted a deep charcoal with grass cloth wall paper above this to add depth and texture to this large area.

We created the most comfy bar chairs for the bar area, upholstering them in a beautiful, soft fabric that works very well with the cinema room decor.

The lounge, family room and playroom all have super comfortable seating with a neutral palette of fabrics that flow seamlessly from one area into the next. A large piece of artwork by Gerart Snyman adorns the wall of the family lounge and adds the colour and the texture we wanted for that space.

Overall this beach house had been given a huge amount of comfort and functionality and is the perfect place to kick back and relax and leave your stresses behind.
